The city of Salem, most well known for its witch trials of the 1690s, attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors each year. There’s no better month than October to visit this fascinating city, which is just 16 miles north of Boston. Salem dedicates the entire month of October to celebrating Halloween and fall. The month is packed with things to do, below are some spooky options.

Salem Witch Museum

This dark and gothic museum is the most visited attraction in Salem. It presents the witch hysteria of 1692 through narratives, dramatic lighting, and exhibits depicting the witch trials.

Haunted Footsteps Ghost Tours

Haunted Footsteps Ghost Tours is the original ghostly tour that began in 1997. It’s a lantern-lit stroll led by entertaining guides. You will learn about Salem’s haunted history, hear true tales of documented paranormal activity, and tour chilling cemeteries.

The House of the Seven Gables 

As the oldest 17th-century wooden mansion in New England, The House of the Seven Gables is a National Historic Landmark. It is best known today as the setting of American author Nathaniel Hawthorne’s 1851 novel, The House of the Seven Gables. Nathaniel Hawthorne is also well known as the author of The Scarlet Letter. During October, there are two theatrical performances at the house on select days. There’s even a mysterious hidden staircase somewhere within the home.

Spooky Shops

The many shops in Salem each have their own unique vibe. Souvenir stores are nestled among magic shops where you may find spell books, candles, and crystals. There are plenty of options for palm and tarot card readings as well.

Haunted Happenings Grand Parade

This parade is the city’s official kickoff to Halloween. It is family-friendly and full of pageantry and music. This year the parade will be held on October 3rd at 6:30 pm.

Halloween BOO!S Cruise

You’ll need your Halloween costume and dancing shoes for this cruise. The Boo!S Cruise is a 21+ event complete with disco lights, DJ, full bar, and grill. Cruises run every Friday and Saturday night in October as well as on Halloween.
