Vegas has David Price winning the AL Cy Young

Whenever a guy gets $217 million to play baseball for seven years then odds are, he’s pretty good at what he does. Well, Las Vegas seems to think it means he must be the best at what he does.

And that is because they have Red Sox starting pitcher David Price favored to win the American League Cy Young Award this season, giving him four to one odds (a 25 percent chance).

Sure, those odds are not a guarantee by any means. But baseball is filled with good starting pitchers. And Vegas’ initial impression is that the Red Sox have the best one. That has to mean something.

Throughout his career, Price has proved he can do something that so few pitchers can say they have done: pitch well in the American League East. There might not be a standout team in the AL East right now, but that is because they all play each other so tough. Certainly, there are not many AL East games that would be considered a “easy win” (unless Matt Barnes is starting).

Price already has a Cy Young to his name. He won it in 2012 when he went 20-5 with a 2.56 ERA in 31 starts for the Tampa Bay Rays.

Last season, Price finished second in the AL Cy Young Award voting when he went 18-5 with a 2.45 ERA in 32 starts split between the Detroit Tigers and Toronto Blue Jays.

Realistically, Price pitched well enough to earn the honor last season, but Houston Astros starter Dallas Keuchel had one more start than him and a slightly lower ERA. Not to mention he had not won the award before.

Switching teams is never easy on players. But Price, who turned 30 just last August, is just at about the height of his career.

Regardless of whether or not he serves his purpose for seven years, this should be a pretty good year for Price. And that is reason to celebrate.
