This Boston Deli Has Been Named One Of The Best New Restaurants In America

Bon Appétit magazine is devoted to all things food and dining so receiving a nod from them is a pretty big deal for a restaurant! Each year, fledgling chefs and restauranteurs covet a spot on their “Hot 10” list of best new restaurants in America. While the final champions have yet to be revealed, Bon Appétit has announced the 50 finalists for 2017.

Amidst the seafood joints, ethnic cuisine, and trendy pizzarias on the list, lies a traditional Jewish delicatessan called Mamaleh’s. Located in Cambridge’s Kendall Square, the deli opened its doors last July.

Chef/owner, Rachel Miller Munzer – also of Hungry Mother and State Park – received praise from the magazine for managing to inject some modern flair into the deli’s traditional fare.

“In Boston, the old-school Jewish deli is new again,” Bon Appétit wrote. “Go here for Jewish deli classics that taste as good as you’ve always wished they would. The bagels and bialys are made in-house; the pastrami and brisket are brined, smoked, and roasted the old-fashioned way; even the sodas—in flavors like celery and beet—are built from house-made shrubs and syrups.”

Mamaleh’s is not the only New England restaurant to score a spot amid the top 50, but they may very well be the underdog. Come August 15 when the final “Hot 10” are announced, I know which local joint I’ll be rooting for!

Three other New England eateries made the list:

Bucktown, a Providence fish shack specializing in fried seafood and chicken, described by Bon Appétit as “A Southern-fried food shack that does New England proud.”

Nina June, a Mediterranean restaurant located on Maine’s Rockport Harbor that the magazine calls “The fantasy vacationland restaurant where Maine meets the Mediterranean.”

And, also in Maine,  The Purple House, a bakery known for Montreal-style bagels cooked in a wood-fired oven located in North Yarmouth.
