These 5 Boston Shops Take Ice Cream To A New Level

Forget the same old boring soft serve, Boston’s top rated ice cream shops all have one thing in common: they are reinventing the typical milk and ice/chocolate and vanilla formula! From dairy-free creations to exotic flavors, these 5 shops are definitely NOT scooping up your grandmama’s ice cream!

1. Toscanini’s Ice Cream
899 Main St., Cambridge

This Cambridge shop has been serving homemade ice cream since 1986. They offer 32 steady flavors including some crazy varieties like churro, green tea cheesecake with cookies & cream, burnt caramel, crunchy peanut butter, and Aztec chocolate. World famous Toscanini’s original flavor favorite, the B3, combines brown sugar, brown butter, and butter brownies, while their Khuflee flavor is reminiscent of aromatic Indian spice, made with cardamom, plus almonds and pistachios. They also serve coffee and baked goods, but who cares when there’s ice cream??

2. Morano Gelato
199 Boylston St., Chestnut Hill

Owner/creator, Morgan Morano studied in Florence, Italy and became inspired to bring the incredible flavors she experienced home to Boston. She even orders many of her ingredients direct from Italy. Morano Gelato has more than 250 flavor creations, with a rotating menu of 12 to 16 available daily. Play it safe with traditional Italian flavors like fior di latte (milk), stracciatella (chocolate chip), nocciola (hazelnut), and pistacchio (pistachio). Or be bold with exotic flavors like olive oil, jasmine, or rose. Summer favorites made with fresh fruit include black raspberry, lemon and basil, and watermelon sorbet.

3. FoMu
655 Tremont St., South End

Every creamy delicious bite at FoMu is dairy-free, made from scratch, locally sourced, and preservative, additive and chemical-free. According to founder Deena Jalal, her ice cream creations are made using plants and coconut milk, giving them a gelato-like consistency. Snag a signature favorite like peanut butter mud pie or chocolate cookie dough, or try a fresh summer delight with fruity flavors like strawberry rhubarb pie, almond raspberry crumble, and blueberry shortbread. They also sell fresh-made pints to go!

4. Cookie Monstah
Food truck schedule

Once you get a taste of these warm, homemade ice cream cookie sandwiches you will find yourself chasing these blue food trucks all over the city! Luckily, by popular demand, the folks behind Cookie Monstah have opened a brick-and-mortar store in Danvers. The cookies are soft baked by co-owner Melissa Gale in childhood favorites like chocolate chip, oatmeal, peanut butter, sugar, snickerdoodle, double chocolate and more, then topped with a heaping scoop of your favorite flavor of Richardson’s ice cream, a family-owned dairy farm in Middleton.

Best-selling ice cream sandwich combos include the PB&J, which features strawberry ice cream served between two peanut butter cookies; the Tahitian, coconut ice cream served between oatmeal cookies; and the classic, vanilla ice cream served between two chocolate chunk cookies.

Hey Cookie, Monstah truck is at Dewey Square 11-6, and The Cookie Monstah Bake Shop is open 2-8!! #cookiemonstahboston #monstahtruck

They also prepare five rotating flavors each month. June’s featured flavors include thai tea and white chocolate with lemon cake and rose jam.  Fresh fruits and vegetables are locally sourced from Red Fire Farm in Granby and Kimball Fruit Farm Stand in Pepperell. Expect wild summer flavors like strawberry lemonade made with fresh lemon curd; port-roasted cherry vanilla; roasted corn with blackberry jam; and basil goat cheese.
