The Red Sox still have to cut one catcher

The Boston Red Sox won the World Series last year. That is a fact.

The Red Sox had three catchers on their roster last year. That is also true.

However, this year they will only be carrying two on the big league roster. Sure, the only way worked, but the team wants Dustin Pedroia on the big league roster. Now, that's not really something we can argue, but that's their plan on Opening Day. And since Pedroia is not durable, they want to carry a pair of utility infielders in Brock Holt and Eduardo Nunez. As a result, one catcher who was on last year's team won't be on this year's team. See where we are going with this?

It's an ugly and divisive situation, honestly. You have Christian Vazquez, Blake Swihart and Sandy Leon and you have to get rid of one of them, apparently, which is stupid. Granted, none of them really performed well last season, but they've had their moments. Blake hit over .300 in the second half in 2015. In 2016, Sandy Leon might've been the best player of all-time, and Rico Petrocelli told me in 2017 that Christian Vazquez deserved to be an All-Star the way he was playing. So yeah, it's definitely a tough spot.

I really do wish they could just put one of them on the disabled list to start the season or do something else with their roster so they could keep one of these guys, but apparently that's not the case.

So what's the answer? Well, Vazquez most likely isn't going anywhere and of the two, Swihart is perceived as having more upside, so yeah....

It will be very sad if they get rid of Sandy Leon, but his days with the org may be numbered. Hopefully the Red Sox come to the right decision though and don't get rid of the best player in team history.
