The Marshfield Fairgrounds Will Host A Summer Drive-In Theater

The Marshfield Fair was the pinnacle of summer for me when I was growing up on the South Shore. Due to ongoing concerns about the novel coronavirus COVID-19, this year's celebration is understandably canceled.
In its place will be yet another summer favorite - a drive-in movie theater! This addition is all the more exciting for film buffs like myself who have been sorely missing the cinema.
According to The Patriot Ledger, the fairgrounds will partner with Fiesta Shows and the Mendon Twin Drive-In to show classic and genre movies as well as blockbusters with a number of sequels, like “Jaws.”
The fun begins Father’s Day weekend with shows on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays throughout the summer.
Each August for more than 150 years, the dusty Marshfield Fairgrounds have been transformed with rides, concessions, games, and displays.
The space is large enough for the movie screen and up to 500 cars, but the Marshfield Agricultural and Horticultural Society, which owns the fairgrounds, will initially limit the shows to 250 cars in accordance with social distancing rules.
“We decided to not have the fair because of the pandemic and, financially, we didn’t think it could have worked,” Marshfield Agricultural and Horticultural Society president Lenny LaForest told The Patriot Ledger. “We were thinking up ways to bring in some income and do something for people, and we landed on a drive-in theater.”
Kowloon restaurant on Route 1 in Saugus and Showcase Cinemas at Patriot Place in Foxborough are also hosting temporary drive-in theaters.
