Sentence Yourself To A Stay At Boston’s Swankiest Prison-Turned-Hotel

Some things are just so crazy they have to be true. The gorgeous four star Liberty Hotel in Boston falls under that category. Gazing at its classic architecture and ornate decor, you’d never guess that the luxurious accommodations began their history as the Charles Street Jail in 1851.

Originally consisting of 220 bleak inmate cells, the vintage bones of the structure still remain and can be viewed from the gorgeous cathedral-ceilinged lobby.

Be sure to catch a glimpse of the incredible 33-foot-high arched windows that provided natural light to the original prison.

Famous former residents of the Charles Street Jail include Sacco and Vanzetti, Malcolm Z, Michael Curley and several World War II prisoners. Nowadays, the hotel pays homage to Hollywood’s hottest law breakers instead.

Although the prison received a multi-million dollar renovation before reopening as the Liberty Hotel in 2007, the integrity of its original purpose remains in the architecture and in the fine details of the decor.
