Enjoy Food, Cocktails & Free Curling At This Boston Hotel

According to research by FiveThirtyEightCurling is the most popular Olympic sport of the last decade. Now, thanks to Boston's Liberty Hotel, you can get in on the fun - for free!

The Liberty recently installed a 40-by-8 foot synthetic curling rink in its courtyard in order to make use of the outdoor space during the winter months.

“We’ve got such great outdoor space at the Liberty in our courtyard,” said Glenn Sampert, general manager of the hotel. “Having outdoor space in the middle of Boston is a great asset.”

The popularity of the sport exploded earlier this year when the U.S. took gold in men’s curling. Lessons at local rinks began to quickly sell out as New Englanders scrambled to learn the art of throwing stones.

From now through February, you and your crew can enjoy free curling on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4 to 8 p.m. While walk-ins are welcome, you may want to make a reservation, as this is bound to be a popular winter activity!

Not only can you curl free of charge, Sampert says the hotel will provide a trained “curling concierge” to teach newbies how to play and ensure that the sessions move along at a steady pace. Games typically last 30 minutes and include four players per team.

Should you work up an appetite while playing, you can warm up with appetizers and cocktails from the Liberty Hotel's customized “après-curling” menu. Guests and spectators are welcome to take their food and drinks ringside.

Curling-themed cocktails include “The Bonspiel,” a cozy concotion made from New England hot mulled cider and baking spices; and “The Stone’s Throw,” made of bourbon, Amantillado sherry, Carpano Antico Formula vermouth, black walnut syrup, and Angostura bitters.

The snacks are equally indulgent, including shishito pepper tempura with spicy Kewpie mayo, and heritage pork meatball with roasted tomato sugo, polenta, and Grana Podano cheese.
