Is John Farrell’s job in danger?

The Boston Red Sox have plenty of question marks headed into the 2015 season, and one of those might be their manager, John Farrell.

The skipper has led the team to back-to-back last place finishes and there is reason to believe that this could be a year where he faces some serious pressure.

2014 he got a free pass because he had led the team to a World Series the year before. And last year, he was diagnosed with cancer, so firing him would not have been a good look for the organization. Cancer free and a few years removed from that miraculous 2013 season, Farrell will need to make this team perfrom or look for a new job.

It seems pretty clear too who the Red Sox would like to replace him with Torey Lovullo, the team’s bench coach, who was their manager for about the final two months of the season last year. Out of respect to his friend, Lovullo did not pursue a managerial job this offseason — even though the interest was high. But could he be there for another motive? Is he there because he thinks if he stays he can land the Red Sox managerial job?

In five big league seasons, Farrell has a losing record (400-410) and that includes the winning baseball his team played under Lovullo when he was away from the team (28-20).

On top of that, the Red Sox, of course, have a new President of Baseball Operations in Dave Dombrowski — and he seems to be the one calling the shots — not general manager Mike Hazen, an Abington native.

Neither of them hired Farrell which would make cutting ties with him easier — if they choose to do so.

Some have high hopes for the Red Sox this season while others acknowledge a series of question marks. It will be up to Farrell to lead the way either way.
