Gerald Green could be big for the Celtics

Gerald Green can do more than dunk.

Yes, he’s probably best remembered in Boston for dethroning Nate Robinson in the NBA dunk contest as he cleared the 5-foot-9er and did his best Dee Brown impression. But in his second tenure with the Boston Celtics, he is likely to prove more serviceable — even if he’s not throwing down mawnstah jams like he used to.

But, at the same time, how many 30 year olds can dunk? A basketball. Not a donut. Oh, not many.

It’s been reiterated but: the Celtics are probably going to be one of the best teams in the NBA this season. It would be fair to say they are the second best team in the NBA’s Eastern Conference. Sorry. The Cleveland LeBron Jameses are probably better. But, with the Celtics being good, Green doesn’t look like he’ll be in the starting five. But, he could be their six or seventh man.

Going straight up and down his career stats, Green has averaged 10 points per game with 2.5 rebounds and an assist per 20.3 minutes. He’s a pretty solid defender but it’s the decent point-scoring keeping him in the league. It’s the threat of Green coming in and hitting a few inside shots that appeals to Boston. Fair.

Green, small forward he is, had his best season in 2013-2014 when he started 48 games for the Phoenix Suns and played in all 82. He averaged 15.8 points per game per 28.4 minutes — a career high. He probably won’t be playing that much. But when you think Gerald Green, just think points.

As y’all might remember, Green spent the first two years of his career in Boston backing up Paul Pierce. Man, I miss that guy. I miss Antoine Walker too. He was pretty beast. And who could forget the greatest of all-time? Brian Scalabrine. Not me.
