Forget New York, Here Are The 7 Best Bagel Joints In Boston

There’s nothing like a quality bagel – firm and flaky on the outside, soft and doughy on the inside. Whether you like yours covered in classic lox & cream cheese or made into a fat, flavorful breakfast sandwich, it’s nice to know where to find a top-notch bagel among the impostors.

Thanks to Yelp and Boston.com, you won’t have to drive to New York City to get the best bagel. Here are the top-rated joints in Boston, Brookline, Cambridge and Somerville – and their most popular menu items – since December 2016.

1. Bagelsaurus — 1796 Massachusetts Ave., Cambridge

The name says it all. These guys are the giants of bagel crafting. They offer nine varieties of cream cheese and spreads, and plan to add an array of fruit cream cheeses made with fresh berries this summer. There are 6 bagel sandwiches on the menu with the “Classic Jumbo,” being the hands-down fan favorite. It is made with a free range over-medium egg, Cabot cheddar cheese, mustard butter and griddled ham on a cinnamon raisin bagel. Don’t knock it till you try it!

2. Mamaleh’s Delicatessen — 15 Hampshire St., Cambridge

At Mamaleh’s they believe bagels aren’t just for breakfast. You will find a menu full of sweet and savory options perfect for breakfast, lunch and even dinner at this Jewish deli in the heart of Kendall Square. Their best-seller is the House Lox. The unique and savory Homemade Ricotta is complimented by the sweet taste of figs and honey. There are seafood fillings like sable and sturgeon and specialty bagels ranging from house-made mustard to poppy seed. There is truly something for everyone – and they serve breakfast all day.

3. Kookoo Café — 7 Station St., Brookline

Kookoo Café’s popular Green Egg & Cheese bagel is a simple creation of eggs, cheese, spinach, and housemade dijon mayo. On top of their selection of delicious bagels, there is also a wide variety of crave-worthy pastries to satisfy your sweet tooth.

4. Thinking Cup — 236 Hanover St., North End

Thinking Cup is famous for its high-end specialty coffee, but apparently the bagels aren’t so bad, either! The classic bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich is made with cage-free eggs, potato, nitrate-free bacon, and gruyere. What could possibly compliment the perfect cup of coffee better than the perfect bagel sandwich?

5. Michael’s Deli — 256 Harvard St., Brookline

Michael’s Deli in Coolidge Corner orders in plain, sesame, and everything bagels from New York’s own A&S Bagels in Franklin Square, but we won’t tell if you won’t! All of their menu sandwiches are available on a bagel. Regulars recommend ordering the special off-menu smoked salmon with pastrami and scrambled eggs. FYI – they make their own mouth-watering pastrami in-house daily!

6. Green T Coffee Shop — 873 South St., Roslindale

If you like a little kick with your eggs, try the Green T Coffee Shop. Their Eldora bagel sandwich features one egg, jalapenos, pepper jack cheese, and chipotle mayo. Don’t dig the spice? There are plenty of traditional and creative favorites from the Western Omelette bagel to the Caprese Breakfast Bagel made with a large brown egg, tomato, fresh mozzarella cheese, basil and balsamic vinaigrette.

7. Levend Bagelry — 100 Hanover St., North End

The owner of this bagel joint is all about health, freshness and innovation. He buys from other local vendors to create unique, farm-to-table creations, and is currently working with a local brewery to produce seasonal beer bagels. Reviewers recommend the “Sweet Potato Sandwich” on a Herb Salt Flake bagel, which features fresh apples from Red Apple Farm.
