Don’t worry about the Celtics… from the free-throw line

Free throws are free points, if you make them. And the Boston Celtics are one of the top teams in the game when it comes to capitalizing on those free chances.

So far this season, the Celtics are ranked No. 2 in the NBA (that’s right, they are the second best among 30 teams) when it comes to hitting free throws. Through 65 games, the squad boasted a 81.1 percent free throw late, which only trailed the Charlotte Hornets.

Unfortunately for the Celtics, they do not get enough opportunities from the line to really make teams pay. They’ve hit the 13th most free throws in the game despite being ranked No. 20 in shots from the line.

In case you were wondering, yes, Isaiah Thomas is the Celtics best free throw shooter. So far, the guy has made 90.9 percent of his tries. He’s one of those guys you don’t have to worry about when the ball is in his hands no matter where he’s shooting though.

In all, there’ five guys on the team hitting more than 80 percent of their free throws this season. Jae Crowder’s 83.6 rate is next up followed by Al Horford — who, for all the negativity he has faced from just about everyone in his first year of the organization, But hey, at least he’s got a strong 81,7 percent rate.

Despite being a bench player, Jonas Jerebko has enjoyed much success from the line, hitting 81.5 percent of his 15-footers. The same could be said for Gerald Green, in his really small role with the team. Even so, he’s made 80.8 percent of his shots at the line.

Tyler Zeller would be like the Shaq of the team, with a 59.3 percent rate from the line but of guys who play a lot, look at Amir Johnson; he’s hit a mere 66.7 percent of his free throws. Even so, that’s not too bad for a center. It could be a lot worse…
