Don’t put too much stock into the Celtics seeding

The Boston Celtics might have finished the regular season with the best record in the Eastern Conference (as a matter of fact, I know they did), but they still probably won’t make it to the NBA finals. That’s a simple X but Y lede. Journalism school 101 right there. Kind of boring, in my opinion, but hey, it gets the people talking–and that’s what you want.

Anyways, yeah, the Celtics game in first place in the NBA’s Eastern Conference by going 53-29. It gave them the No. 1 seed in the playoffs. But let’s be realistic here: what can you really expect from these guys?

For starters, don’t expect them to be the best team in the Eastern Conference. The Celtics have been boringly consistent this season. They’ve won a lot of the games they should. They’ve lost a lot of the games they should. They’ve been very healthy this year. That’s huge. You need all your good players on the court. But that also detracts from the “it’s not where you start, it’s where you finish” mentality, which calls for a musical number.

Think about this why doncha: Kevin Love only played in 60 games for the Cleveland Cavaliers this season. But when he played, they went 40-20. That’s a higher win rate than the Celtics. Two of their recent losses came to the Atlanta Hawks, who are a team who have had the Celtics number the past two times they played, putting up 114 and 123 points respectively. Not to harp on the old go-to scorer point again because that’s clearly Isaiah Thomas now, but it might be a little more difficult for a team when the postseason rolls around and their best scorer is 5-foot-9. Kind of a far-fetched idea, but you have to wonder if he can be shut down by these quality teams and if he is, who is going to pick up the pieces? Hmmm…
