David Ortiz is a great man who saves lives

Still in shock that it happened.

I think everyone by now must know what happened to David Ortiz, getting shot at a bar in the Dominican Republic on Sunday night. It was truly terrible. He seems like a great man and why anyone would want to hurt him is just truly terrible.

Not only is Ortiz a great ballplayer (in the grand scheme, that's not really relevant), but he has saved a lot of lives in his home country of the Dominican Republic.

You see, the David Ortiz Children's Fund, according to its official website, "provides essential support for children in the Dominican Republic and in New England who cannot afford the critical cardiac services they need."

And, in their words, every $5,000 raised saves a child's life.

Well, Ortiz has raised millions of dollars and as of 2016, had saved about 700 lives so far. Keep in mind, he has kept the charity going since his playing days have ended and his charity golf tournament every year raises more than one million dollars--or saves more than 200 lives, if you think of it that way.

Is he a Boston sports icon? Yes. Is he a larger than life figure among Red Sox fans? Of course. But let's be honest, what he does on his own time voluntarily is far more impactful.

This is how he chooses to spend some of his free time and use his status as a public figure. It's so great he does it, especially since no one forces him to; he just wants to help people.

Luckily, it seems like he should be OK, but it's still unbelievably sad what happened to him.

The guy does so much good for the world and will continue to; that's what we need more of from people out there.
