Chris Marrero would be an interesting September call-up

Natural power is the most rare tool present in position players so any time a player has it, they are worth watching — even if the rest of their game is shoddy.

With September coming up, it is nearly the point in Major League Baseball’s season where rosters expand. Teams can carry up to 40 players on their big league roster in September, albeit few take full advantage of the situation. By the end of the season, most teams have around 30-35 players but with September 1 lurking, the Red Sox must be looking at some of their options: including Chris Marrero.

Yes, there’s a Chris Marrero too. He’s Deven Marrero’s cousin. No, the Red Sox didn’t draft Chris, they signed him as a Minor League free agent late last year and in Triple-A, despite not being the perfect player, he’s shown PawSox fans he’s good at something they care about: hitting home runs.

To be exact, he’s hit 23 in 123 games this season. He’s also hitting .285 with an .845 OPS. Versatility could also play in his favor as he plays both corner outfield slots and first base. That’s kind of like Brock Holt without the NESN slogan suggestions.

Sure, at 28 years old, Marrero would not make a huge impact on the Red Sox lineup (because it’s already the best in baseball), but teams like power. And guys with power tend to receive big league chances. Who knows? Maybe he can pop a few dingers if the Sox call him up.

Marrero last played in a big league game in 2013 and in parts of three big league seasons, he’s a .232 hitter with a .528 OPS. And in 125 at-bats, he has yet to hit a big league home run. But then again, he never had this kind of power until this year.

Unlike his cousin, Marrero is not on the 40-man roster. But there is an open spot on it.
