Catch A Screening Of 'Shutter Island' At The Abandoned Hospital Where It Was Filmed

On Saturday, Sept. 5 and Sunday, Sept. 6, the Coolidge Corner Theatre will host a very special addition to their summer drive-in series. On these two days only, they will screen the classic 2010 film Shutter Island on the grounds of the abandoned (and very spooky) Medfield State Hospital where it was filmed.
The mystery/thriller is based on the 2003 book of the same name by Dorchester-native, Dennis Lehane. It stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Mark Ruffalo, Michelle Williams, and Ben Kingsley.
Shutter Island tells the story of U.S. Marshall Teddy Daniels as he travels to a secluded mental hospital on a remote New England Island to search for a missing patient.
With twists and turns around every corner, the Martin Scorsese-directed movie has one of the best twist endings of all-time (No spoilers here!) and grossed more than $294 million worldwide.
Whether you have seen it and loved it, or want to experience it for the first time, a viewing at the deserted hospital is the way to do it.
Medfield State Hospital opened in 1892 and was MA's first mental asylum. After closing in 2003, it became a popular filming spot for many Hollywood movies, including “Knives Out,” “The Box,” and “New Mutants,” the upcoming X-Men spinoff set to hit theaters on Aug. 28.
The movie will be projected onto a 30-foot inflatable screen. In order to cover the equipment and set-up costs, tickets will be $25 per person. However, your ticket price affords you the extra perk of exploring the hospital grounds before the show starts at sundown (around 8 p.m.).
