Bye bye, Blake Swihart

Alright, well, I don't really know how to put this...

But it appears as though the Boston Red Sox may have been overvaluing Blake Swihart all along. Sure, he got talked about as if he was the second coming of Carlton Fisk, but that potential was never really unleashed.

Sure, he batted over .300 in the second half of the 2015 season, but other than that, not really much to say about him. His defense wasn't great. He got hurt in 2016 and 2017. Last year, he was kind of a burden on the roster, not really getting much playing time. So finally, they had to DFA him to get Sandy Leon onto the big league roster.

So when the Red Sox DFAd him, they dealt him and International Amateur Signing Pool Space to the Arizona Diamondbacks for Marcus Wilson, a AA outfielder who doesn't crack any top prospect lists. So, in other words, it was not a great trade. No offense to Wilson, but there were Red Sox fans who viewed Swihart as a starting catcher, so to give him up AND money for someone who isn't a top prospect is a disappointment for many people.

Again, that's nothing against Wilson, who we hope pans out well. He could because he has a .350 career on-base percentage as a pro. But this is about Swihart.

Swihart is a lifetime .256 MLB hitter with a .681 OPS and negative defensive metrics in over 200 big league games. He hasn't been a starting catcher for a winning ballclub. The Red Sox mismanaged some things here and there.

Hopefully, he has a productive MLB career somewhere. But hey, there's nothing we can do about it now. What has happened has happened. Now, we must move forward and hope dumping him was worth putting Leon on the roster.
