Breaking down the Red Sox middle infield depth

The Boston Red Sox have a solid middle infield with Dustin Pedroia and Xander Bogaerts.

That means they are in pretty good shape. From there, however, the middle infield situation gets tricky. That said, perhaps he should take a look at what they have going on for depth--since there’s plenty of it:

Brock Holt -- Holt suffered from vertigo last season, but he can play seven of nine positions on the diamond. He still has a minor league option remaining too, so it will be interesting to see what happens to him.

Deven Marrero -- Marrero is a top-notch infield defender at three spots (second base, shortstop and third base). He is out of minor league options. He is bound to crack the roster as a utility infielder.

Blake Swihart -- Yeah, man. So Swihart hasn’t caught a ton the past two seasons. BUT.: he can play left field and played some first base for the PawSox last season. AND he is going to play some second base during spring training. He is out of minor league options and since he has had two stints where he was an everyday MLB player (who is out of options), he may just crack the big league roster this spring now that he’s healthy. Plus, it would be huge to have three catches on an MLB roster.

Tzu-Wei Lin -- Lin did a nice job filling in at third base last season and spent the last couple months playing the outfield (center field) for the PawSox. Since he wasn’t a September call-up and has two options left, he is almost guaranteed to start the year in Pawtucket, but should be one of the first choices to call up since he also plays second and third base.

Marco Hernandez -- Hernandez saw some big league action over the last two seasons, but got hurt and missed the majority of the 2017 season. He is a competent fill-in at second base and shortstop (but a horrid third baseman). If Dustin Pedroia is hurt to start the season, then he very well may be on the Opening Day roster. But he does have a pair of MiLB options remaining, so there is a good chance he spends the bulk of the season in Pawtucket.
