BC hockey standout/Red Sox ball girl drafted first overall in NWHL draft

Katie Burt is a phenomenal athlete.
The Lynn native had a tremendous career at Boston College (and the US National team that she’s still a[part of) and because of that, was selected by the Boston Pride, first overall, in the National Women’s Hockey League draft this week. Anyone who follows her team wouldn’t be shocked by that though since she allowed just 1.54 goals per game with the Eagles last season.
This should not come as a shock to anyone though. After all, she was the starting varsity goaltender for the Lynn/Winthrop girls’ hockey team when she was in sixth grade, and she was quite good from all accounts. Since that was easy, she decided to play at an ISL school in high school and leave after her junior year to play for BC.
Oh yeah, and during her college days, she also became an employee of the Boston Red Sox. Specifically, she is one of their ball girls at Fenway Park.

So now she’s working for two pro teams. Not bad. Not bad at all.
That should not be a shock for anyone either because she was also a standout baseball player growing up. She won the Lynn Little League home run derby in 2009. If she was allowed to play at Buckingham Browne and Nichols, she probably would’ve been quite good there too.
The other real interesting local pick in that draft was Norwell native Kenzie Kent, who was taken fourth overall by the pride again. At BC, she had a standout career for the hockey team and the lacrosse team. That’s right: excelling for two Division 1 teams.
Here’s another interesting fact: there’s two pro women’s hockey teams in the Boston area. There’s the Pride in the NWHL and the Boston Blades in the CWHL (Canadian Women’s Hockey League). I mean, I don’t quite understand why there’s a Boston team in a Canadian League, but I’m sure the skill level is quite good. I’m just more of an American, and so is Heath Hembree.
Just goes to show how good the local hockey scene is these days.
