4 New England Brews Make Wine Enthusiast’s List Of Best Beers

Wine Enthusiast knows more than just wine. Each year since 2009 they have released a list of their Top 25 Beers. The current annual roundup celebrates “the most impressive, interesting, and exciting beers we had the pleasure to review throughout 2019.”
Wine Enthusiast scored each beer on a 100-point-scale, just as they do with their top wine picks. Not only did four New England breweries make this year's list, one even scored the number one spot!
That honor went to the Bourbon Barrel-Aged Framinghammer from Jack’s Abby
The brew scored an impressive 95 points, with the publication describing it as “big and bold right from the start,” and “an outstanding barrel-aged porter, with everything playing well together and in perfect harmony.”
Jack's Abby's Springdale brewery also took the #11 slot for its wine-infused brew, Springdale Friends in Merlot Places.
The American wild ale is brewed with California merlot and aged in French and American oak wine barrels. According to Wine Enthusiast:
“The result is a harmonious, vibrant and grapy pour, with assertive vinous aromas of tart raspberry, cherry and balsamic that are partnered with seductive hints of cocoa powder, caramel, and raw sweet dough.”
The 14th and 15th top beers also went to New England breweries with Maine Beer Company‘s American pale ale, Peeper scoring 92 points for #14, and Connecticut's Two Roads Brewing Co. landing at #15 for its Area Two Brett Noir.
Wine Enthusiast describes Peeper as having “more notes of pithy grapefruit, lemon and strawberry hull at first, but then veers into a grainy sweetness that fleshes out the feel and lends some support to the final dry, bitter impression.”
As for the Area Two Brett Noir:
“It’s tangy and refreshing, with a cleansing pucker followed by an evolving finish that offers notes of leather, dried orange blossom and cocoa-dusted cherry skin.”
