2 New Somerville Restaurants Put Davis Square On The Map For Pizza

Somerville's Davis Square is home to the Somerville Theater, the Museum of Bad Art, comedy clubs, quirky shops, and several trendy restaurants and bars. This fall, two inventive new eateries arrived in the eclectic space, helping to place Davis Square among Boston's pizza hot spots.

Dragon Pizza

Dragon Pizza is the joint effort of established Boston pizza chefs, Charlie Redd and Keenan Langlois. They opened their doors on September 7 and specialize in thin-crust, New York-style pizzas with creative topping combos.

Specialties include the fall Margherita pizza topped with pumpkin, mozzarella, and sage; fans of local seafood will enjoy the clam, linguiça, and kale pie; or for something sweet and spicy, enjoy a pie topped with house-made sausage, ricotta, bacon, cheddar and chili maple syrup. For less adventurous souls, Dragon Pizza also serves the standards like cheese and pepperoni.

Don't forget to try the smoke-grilled kebabs, specialty salads and gelato for dessert.

Mortadella Head

Mortadella Head is brought to you by the same folks who perfected  the cheeseburger. The team from Boston Burger Co. opened the unique pizza/sandwich shop in Davis Square earlier this month.

While Dragon Pizza features thin-crust pies, Mortadella Head's pizzas are Roman-style, deep-dish offerings, sliced into thick, square slices. They are coated in thick layers of fresh, exciting toppings like fried eggplant, pickled jalapenos, sliced potato, broccoli rabe and sauerkraut.

Fan favorites include snarkily named menu options like the Tropic Thunder, featuring tomato sauce, pineapple, pickled red onion, pickled jalapeno, fior de latte, mozzarella, salsa verde, and sesame seed; the Cousin Vinny, with white sauce, prosciutto, roasted garlic, fior de latte, arugula, and lemon aioli; and the Pig Mac, topped with ground beef, bacon, tomato, caramelized onion, iceberg lettuce, American cheese, 1000 island dressing, and pickles.

Not in the mood for pizza? Choose one of the restaurants dozen or so massive sandwiches stacked with fresh, Italian meats, cheeses and toppings. They also serve wings and an impressive selection of topped french fries. Chicken Parmesan fries, anyone??
